Tease Out: Being Mean Won’t Solve Childhood Obesity

Shocking ads in Georgia address the serious problem of childhood obesity. But some think the ads could actually back fire.

With statements like “It’s hard being a little girl if you’re not.” “Big bones didn’t make me this way. Big meals did.” and “Being fat takes the fun out of being a kid.” researchers feel that the guilt and shaming tactics could make the problem worse.

FUCKING THANK YOU. I’m so glad someone has picked up on how terrible these advertisements are. Commercials, bill boards, I mean come on people. They are children. Telling these kids that it’s no fun to be fat is going to make them feel horrible about themselves. This is not the way to be going about this. How about promoting healthier lifestyles and teaching the parents of these children that they are going to shorten their kids’ lifespans and subject them to constant teasing throughout life if they take them to eat Burger King every day? How about spending some of that precious money you’re using for these advertisements to ensure better physical education programs in public schools? Or maybe just make advertisements that promote healthy living, exercise, and good eating habits instead of putting down children who probably have no say in their diet and exercise routines BECAUSE THEY ARE CHILDREN. Sure, one day, they might get old enough to say “I don’t want to be overweight anymore, and I’m going to go to the gym and work out on a regular basis and start eating healthier”, but until then, THEY ARE KIDS and giving them the idea that their life isn’t as good as other kids’ just because they weigh more is absolutely disgusting.
